Nominal vs. Actual Size

Dimensional lumber can be found in both nominal and actual sizing. The most common, and familiar type of dimensional lumber is two-by-four. In order to reduce log waste, and due to the width of a saw blade most two-by-fours end up being 1-½ x 3-½ inches.

The difference between nominal and actual can be somewhat confusing and difficult to remember. Use the information below to help you remember the difference.

Nominal Size: Nominal literally means “existing in name only” which gives mills some latitude in naming and sizing. This is why a 2×4 can be called a 2×4 but measure at 1-½ x 3-½. It can also mean that a 2×4 can measure at the true size of 2×4. In older homes, the full, true size of a 2×4 is most common since much of the wood used was from old-growth and not from the engineered woods used today.

Actual Size: Thin of actual size as if you were measuring the dimensions of lumber with a tape measure. Actual size is anywhere from ¼ inch to ¾ inch less than full-sized nominal sized lumber.

Overall you will see lumber in stores labeled as their nominal size (2×4, 2×6, 2×10 etc.) but if you measure it you will get the actual size.

Ashley River Lumber can produce both nominal and actual sized lumber, depending on your needs. You never want to mix and match old lumber with new and nominal with actual due to the variations in dimensions. Contact us or request a quote for more information.
